Golf fans attending PGA European Tour tournaments will soon have access to Wi-Fi.

The Professional Golfers Association has teamed up with Xirrus with the ultimate aim of providing Wi-Fi across 18 holes of every course on the tour.

It comes after the huge success of a pilot installation at the BMW PGA Championships at Wentworth Club in May. According to thedrum.com, more than 3,500 devices connected ot the network throughout that tournament.

Now, Xirrus is hoping to expand the service across all courses, allowing golf fans to engage with video highlights and interactive content.

In an interview with sportspromedia.com, European Tour ICT director Graham Glifford said that he hopes the new technology would encourage golf fans to watch the sport live on the course instead of on TV.

He said: “The delivery of high-performance Wi-Fi from Xirrus allows us to provide spectators with a home entertainment type experience on the golf course, enabling them to enjoy video and interactive content, visit online communities and share their experiences with friends on social media.”

The first step of the next phase will be to install Wi-Fi across all 18 holes at Wentworth Club. However, there are plans to introduce the service at other courses before the end of the year.
