Some of Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train stations will soon be trialling a new free Wi-Fi service, in a bid to boost wireless connectivity for commuters waiting for their train to come.

According to channelnewsasia.com, Wireless@sg, who is providing the service, has said the wireless will be free, seamless and will reach speeds of up to 2Mbps.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is implementing the scheme to try to improve the service provided by the public transport network and is part of its master plan.

“LTA will monitor the trial for two years before deciding if the service will be extended to other MRT stations,” the authority said in a statement.

When the service is rolled out in the middle of the year, Wi-Fi will be available at 28 MRT stations, 12 of which are major stations with high commuter numbers. The 12 major stations are: Jurong East, Raffles Place, City Hall, Dhoby Ghaut, Bishan, Serangoon, Buona Vista, Outram Park, Paya Lebar, Orchard, Choa Chu Kang and HarbourFront.

There has already been some criticism regarding the announcement though, as some train users have taken to social networking site Twitter to complain about Wireless@sg’s service. Complaints include a slow log in service and poor connection quality, reports zdnet.com. However, a trial will surely reveal just how successful the service is and if there are problems, they can be tackled at a later stage.
