Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is testing out the Wi-Fi connection on its new ‘Wi-Fi tram’, reports messengernewspapers.co.uk.
Metrolink tram number 3054 is currently trialling a brand new free Wi-Fi service and if it is successful, the entire fleet of trams could become Wi-Fi hotspots, reports rochdaleonline.co.uk.
Passengers using the Wi-Fi tram can now access most websites for free on their phones, tablets and laptops whilst on their way to work or the shopping centre.
Chair of the TfGM committee, councillor Andrew Fender, said he wants users to help them by logging onto the service and giving feedback, to let them know how well it is working or not.
He said: “We live in a digital age and people want to make the best use of their travelling time – and if this test goes well we hope to have funding available to roll out Wi-Fi to all trams. We know customers want better Metrolink information and ultimately we want people to have real time information about services at their fingertips – on their smartphones and tablets.”
TfGM and Manchester City Council are also working together to bring free Wi-Fi to Manchester’s city centre. Fourteen locations are already live, including the Arndale shopping centre.
